I didn't use a certain size. Freeform! I then took all the pieces, evened them out and did a series of 2 1/2" strips around each. Sewed them all together... Ta Da! About a crib size. I ended up using a brown dotted swiss for the backing. All that from my stash! I bought the fabric on our last trip to Indy[not enough.. isn't that how it always works?] and have 4 x 4 diamonds going. Kinda like a log cabin but in a diamond shape instead. Looks like I'll need to make another trip to a quilt shop to get some more fabice to complete my project.
